Competition for the Olympic Media Village for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (1st Prize)
WEST LAND- Convention Center, Business Center and 5 * Hotel
The project maintains a clear desire to create public space for the citizens, this is the starting point and the key throughout the proposed concept.
The abilitu to generate public space is almost nonexistent, initially, on a plot where the building coefficient is dangerously close to an index 10 (m²sl / sqm). We must add the program conditions that involves the introduction of a facility as the Convention Center, which does not allow a densified height growth, quite the contrary. This is because we need to incorporate high bright compartimentalized rooms with dimensions (150 x 50 m and heights between 5 m and 10 m) and other smaller ones, and auditoriums, etc; to host all kinds of events, fairs, etc.
At this point, the public space happening practically nil; 4 facades of 15 m high and high occupancy prevent any use and / or extra-program activity.
Through a simple gesture and / or fold-base, we aim to give citizens access to a new and vast public space, which will be located in the facade of the building cover-base. A huge area of free space, which initially has about 40,000 m² urban park.
A new perspective on the city and Guanabara Bay, occurs in the eyes of the new visitor, for the first time, rises above the car and any road system, dominating the view over the Canal do Mangue, the new Olympic Village, etc.
A new urban space able to host events of any (cultural, sports, tourism, entertainment, etc.) type for both the Olympic and post-Olympic period, and that in turn, will serve as a support tool and rest for thousands of workers that will house the whole.
On-base percentage, occurs the remaining program loaded with a total of approximately 230.000 m² and composed by the Hotel *****, the Business Center as well as areas supporting documents such as commercial and service areas.
The hotel acts as host and function adopts landmark on the entry-exit of the city as a tower with about 45 floors.
Initially rectangular (a height 0.00 m), as it gains height, geometry receives F.Bicalho Avenue, taking a new line on the avenue, at his coronation.
A building and / or changing new milestone, a double pure and homogeneous skin along its entire height, and thanks to its mixture of uses inside (including digital media), it adopts geometries, appearances and different colors along day.
